Dr. David Abrutyn, sports medicine specialist and sought-after speaker and presenter, spoke with an audience of experts about neck and shoulder injuries youth wrestlers face. The event, titled “A Sports Medicine Approach to Wrestling” and sponsored by JAG-ONE Physical Therapy, was held in Chatham, NJ on October 17, 2018.
Dr. Abrutyn was one of three presenters speaking to an audience of certified athletic trainers serving wrestling teams throughout New Jersey. He was chosen by the organizers due to his knowledge and long experience with sports medicine and sports injuries. A highly sought expert in sports medicine, Dr. Abrutyn frequently gives talks and lectures both to his medical peers and to the general public.
Scrambles, takedowns and high amplitude throws sometimes result in an athlete landing on the neck or shoulder, which can be potentially catastrophic due to the high-impact nature of the sport. Dr. Abrutyn gave advice to attendees on quickly diagnosing these injuries, triaging them and rapidly getting expert medical attention for the athlete.
Other presenters—a physician and a doctor of physical therapy (DPT)—spoke about hip and knee injuries wrestlers sustain, and about returning to the mat after an injury. Besides better equipping audience members to manage their athletes’ injuries in the upcoming wresting season, attending the course netted attendees continuing education credits.
