Dr. Kavanagh provides care for both pediatric and adult patients. The goal of his practice is to provide his patients with the best physician/patient experience they can have as they recover from their injuries. Dr. Kavanagh provides care for all aspects of orthopedic problems. He specializes in sports-related injuries of the shoulder, elbow, wrist, hip, knee, foot and ankle. Dr. Kavanagh also practices general orthopedics and treats a variety of common orthopedic injuries such as fractures, sprains, strains and neck/back pain. His expertise includes non-operative and operative (open and arthroscopic) treatment, surgery of the meniscus, rotator cuff, labrum as well as ligament and tendon repair/reconstruction of the knee and shoulder.
Dr. Kavanagh is a native of Mahwah, N.J and a graduate of Mahwah High School. He graduated cum laude from James Madison University in Harrisonburg, Virginia with a Bachelor of Science degree. He received his Doctorate of Medicine degree from Eastern Virginia Medical School in Norfolk, Virginia. Dr. Kavanagh completed his internship and residency in orthopedic surgery at the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey, in Newark, NJ (now Rutgers New Jersey Medical School). During his residency, Dr. Kavanagh received a wide range of orthopedic training, particularly in orthopedic trauma surgery at University Hospital in Newark, which is a level one trauma center. Following residency, Dr. Kavanagh traveled to California where he completed a sports medicine fellowship at Kaiser Permanente in Irvine.
Dr. Kavanagh is a member of the American Association of Orthopaedic Surgeons and the American Academy of Orthopaedic Sports Medicine.
“My goal is to provide my patients with the best experience they can have while recovering from their injuries,” says Dr. Kavanagh. “I try to individualize a patient’s treatment plan based on their symptoms and how it relates to their specific activities and lifestyle. It’s important for my patients to know all their nonsurgical and surgical treatment options.”
Dr. Kavanagh currently lives in Wyckoff, New Jersey, with his wife, Lauren, their two children, and their dog, Daisey. While he is not working with patients, Dr. Kavanagh enjoys gardening, fishing and skiing.
